RankLoading…|Male
“Young goat”

Giles from the Late Latin name Aegidius, which is derived from Greek αιγιδιον (aigidion) meaning "young goat". Saint Giles was an 8th-century miracle worker who came to southern France from Greece. He is regarded as the patron saint of the crippled. In Old French the name Aegidius became Gidie and then Gilles, at which point it was imported to England.

Saintly namesake: Saint Giles was a Christian hermit from the 8th century, known for his piety and compassion. He is one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers and is remembered as the patron of the disabled and beggars. (September 1 · 8th century)
