“Beloved”

David from the Hebrew name דָּוִד (Dawid), which was probably derived from Hebrew דוד (dwd) meaning "beloved". David was the second and greatest of the kings of Israel, ruling in the 10th century BC. Several stories about him are told in the Old Testament, including his defeat of Goliath, a giant Philistine. According to the New Testament, Jesus was descended from him.

Biblical namesake: David was the shepherd boy who became the second king of Israel, remembered for his courage against Goliath, his poetic psalms, and his central role in the history of Israel. (1 Samuel · 1 Samuel 16-31, 2 Samuel 1-24, 1 Chronicles 11-29)

Saintly namesake: Saint David is the patron saint of Wales, remembered as a 6th-century bishop and founder of monastic communities. He is celebrated for his leadership and influence on Welsh Christianity. (March 1 · 6th century)
